The Log Cabin project

Near the City of Bend on the Deschutes river in Oregon, USA we are building a log cabin. Well, actually, a general contractor will be building it on Rennie's land under his supervision, but as a property investment its a lot more exciting than a 2 bed flat in Brixton !



It should end up looking something like this, with 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms and a bonus room above a double garage to be added to the side.

Here's a cabin, variation of the same design as ours, that Chris & Cliff (our general contractors) are building for a client up in the hills, a few miles the other side of Bend.

Xmas in the US

Three loverly weeks off over Xmas, spent on the West side of the US. Trix & I went back to Seattle, catching the Cascades train down from there to Portland. Still suffering from the aftermath of terrible ice storms, the journey took a lot longer than planned, but we still met up with our pal Geoff who had come over via San Francisco. Together with Trix's Mum (Caroline) we all squeezed in at Ren's place for the "Holidays", with a trip down to Bend to check on progress with the cabin. It became clear that the orriginal plan to spend a few nights there was not possible due to somewhat slow progress with the build, but at least we got the garage doors installed whilst there. New Years day, Trix & I went on down to Las Vegas - which also looks like a construction site at present with several building sites along the strip.

Back to the States - May/June 08

The end of May & it was back to the west coast again for a long break from the grind back home. There was still work to be done to finish off the cabin & a punch list (snagging list as we'd say in the UK) to focus our contractors mind on. We set up a WiFi network, hung a couple more pictures, completed some painting, pruned a few trees, cleared some scrub, fixed a kitchen unit, built & fitted some steps for the deck ... & then collapsed ! Not all work though; we did get a chance to explore some of the local attractions - the peaceful lakes up in the Paulina Mountains, the falls along the Deschutes river & the remarkable volcanic lava formations. (go check out the Snowgoose web site if you really want to know) Unusually for central Oregon at this time of the year, the weather had not been that good, with lots of cloud & cool temperatures. So it was off to Vegas once more for a bit of guaranteed sunshine.
